With the release of Windows 10, the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge has replaced Internet Explorer as the default online browsing experience. Despite the fact that the ability to read and modify PDF documents is a helpful tool, the experience only provides limited functionality in this case. When opening PDF files on your computer, you may always alter the Windows 10 settings to deactivate Microsoft Edge and use another program as the default PDF reader every time you open this type of file format on your computer, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Xodo, orSumatraPDF.

Changing The Default PDF Viewer In Windows 10

Installing Google Chrome is the first thing that everyone does when they get a new computer. That’s the last time we want to see Microsoft Edge, the uninspired web browser that comes preinstalled on Windows 10. However, at some time, you will click on a PDF file, and Edge will be launched. You will wince and maybe shout unintentionally as a result of this. Problem is, Microsoft has made Edge the default program for opening PDF files, which is a bad idea. I created a guide on setting up Windows 10 a couple of years ago, which included information on the procedures that the majority of people should follow to smooth out the rough edges of Windows 10.

  • In any case, it’s worth checking when you buy a new computer.
  • Due to changes in the process of changing defaults during the past year, this is a revised version of the previous instructions for doing so.
  • Let’s just leave it at “slowly” for the time being.
  • There isn’t much else.
  • What’s more, there are already speculations that the font settings may be relocated out of the Control Panel, where they have been rotting largely untouched for the past two decades.

How to change the default PDF viewer in Windows 10

Select Start / Settings / Apps / Default Apps from the Start menu. (Alternatively, click Start and type inDefault applications.) It will be available from the menu.) When you click on each of the icons, a list of the apps that are capable of dealing with that category displays. In the case of Outlook, for example, users can choose the Email icon to make Outlook the default application for mail, contacts, and calendar, and the built-in Windows 10 Mail program will be hidden from view by default.

  • A little commercial touting how great Edge is, designed to be a minor source of irritation, will appear before you can make the switch.
  • One of your first tasks will be to determine which PDF-opening tool you like to use.
  • Perhaps you have a subscription to the full version of Adobe Acrobat DC, or you have an other program that you prefer.
  • Then navigate toSettings / Applications / Default Apps and selectChoose default apps by file type from the drop-down menu underneath the icons.
  • Be amazed at how intricate computers may be as you go on your journey.
  • Done!
  • As far as we know, Microsoft has not changed these settings in the previous few of updates, so hopefully you will not have to go through this process again when the next update comes out.
  • Thus, it’s important to note that this isn’t the only method of changing defaults.

You can open a PDF file in File Explorer by right-clicking on it and selecting “Open with / Choose another app.” From there, you can choose the software you wish to use and check the box that says “always use this app to open.pdf files.” Adobe recommends the following method: right-click a PDF file and choose Properties, then select the “Change” button byOpens with from the drop-down menu.

Use whatever approach is most convenient for you. Edge is something that can be defeated!

How to Change Default PDF Viewer in Windows 10

It is certain that if you are doing any serious work on your computer, you will come across the PDF (Portable Document Format) file format sooner rather than later. This is the appropriate document type for any files that need to retain their formatting, such as presentations. It is supported by all of the main computer systems, as well as by all of the mobile devices. You may read your PDFs in a variety of ways, and each viewing application is a little bit different from the others. The following steps will show you how to change the default PDF viewer in Windows 10.

Why Change your Default PDF Viewer?
