How to Disable Skype or Completely Uninstall It on Windows 10

Skype used to be one of my favorite programs. The video conferencing experience was of unsurpassed quality. When it came to connecting with friends or colleagues, the term “Skype” used to be the most commonly heard. That is no longer the case! Because to Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype in 2011, the communication platform has undergone significant transformation from the clean, user-friendly software that we users previously loved. Until recently, Skype was a verb, entering the ranks of corporations such as Google and Facebook, whose services are extremely vital to us.

  • Sad?
  • However, as technology improves, we must occasionally move forward since we always like to attempt new and better things, don’t you think?
  • One feature of the software that I found particularly irritating was the fact that Skype would launch on its own.
  • Even worse, it occasionally ran in the background in a “sneaky” manner, using excessive system resources (CPU, memory, disk space, and so on) on my machine.
  • What causes Skype to start up at random?
  • How can I uninstall Skype from my Windows 10 computer?
  • That’s why I’m producing this article, in which I’ll provide a variety of various methods for removing Skype from your computer — so that Windows 10 can start up faster and you can get more work accomplished.
  • Additionally, see:How to Uninstall and Reinstall Skype on a Mac

How to Stop Skype from Starting Automatically Windows 10

As previously stated, Skype consumes far more resources on a computer than it should. If you want to have Skype installed on your computer but don’t want it to launch automatically when your computer starts, you can easily disable it using the Task Manager. Here’s how you go about it: Step 1: Launch the Task Manager application on Windows 10. You may either launch it by typing its name into your browser’s search box or by right-clicking the menu bar at the bottom of your desktop and selecting “Task Manager.” Step 2: You’ll be presented with a Task Manager window similar to the one shown below.

  • Click on the “Startup” tab and then scroll down until you find the Skype symbol.
  • That’s all there is to it.
  • Tip: Pay close attention to the apps that have the status “Enabled” in the Status column.
  • If you don’t require them to operate on a regular basis, turn them off.

You’ve successfully prevented Skype (or other applications) from starting automatically on Windows 10. What if you really want to get rid of Skype from your computer completely? We’re going to demonstrate a couple alternative approaches to completing the task.

4 Ways to Completely Uninstall Skype on Windows 10

You must first close Skype and ensure that none of its services are operating in the background before you can proceed with any of the solutions listed below. Important: First and foremost, if you have Skype open, shut it. Simply click on the “X” in the top-right corner of the screen, which should be highlighted in red when you scroll your mouse over the icon. The Skype symbol may be found in the Windows navigation bar if you glance down near the bottom of the screen. To exit Skype, right-click on the icon and select “Exit Skype.” Great!

Note:

  • It is advised that you use Method 1-3 if you do not wish to install any third-party uninstaller tools
  • It is advised that you use Method 4 in various cases, such as when Skype cannot be removed using the conventional procedures (also known as methods 1-3)

Method 1: Uninstall via Control Panel

Uninstalling Skype or any other application using the Control Panel is the quickest and most convenient method. You will avoid mistakenly deleting shortcuts or other apps such as Skype for Business if you do it this way. Additionally, it should be mentioned that Skype is available as a desktop program as well as a Windows application for users to choose from. Installing the Skype app from the Windows Store and downloading the desktop version from the Skype website are both viable options. We’ll go through how to remove them both in this section.

Once the Control Panel has been opened, locate and click on the “Uninstall a Program” link in the bottom-left corner.

Select “Uninstall” from the context menu when you right-click on it.

Once it has been completed, you will receive an alert.

Method 2: Uninstall Skype Directly

Alternatively, if you know where the Skype file is located on your computer, you may remove it straight from that location as an alternative. Most people will find it in the Programs folder of their computer. The file that most of us see on our desktops is generally a shortcut to the real file that we wish to remove, not the actual file itself. Simply put “Skype” into Cortana’s search box, which is located in the bottom-left corner of the screen. Once the application appears, select it using the right-click menu and then select “Uninstall.” There is no difference between downloading the installation file from Skype.com and downloading the installer file from the Microsoft Store when it comes to the Skype app.

Method 3: Uninstall through Settings

Enter the word “programs” in Cortana’s search box and select the “Add or delete programs” option from the drop-down menu. Following there, choose ApplicationsFeatures and then scroll down until you reach the Skype application. As you can see in the image below, both versions of the program are installed on my machine. To uninstall one of them, select it and press the Uninstallbutton. Once the first is completed, repeat the process with the second.

Removing Residual Files Associated with Skype

Despite the fact that you have removed the Skype application, it is quite likely that some leftover files connected to Skype are still there on your computer, using up valuable disk space. Click “Windows + R” together and type “percent appdata percent” into the dialog box that opens to locate and remove them. On most computers, the Windows button is located between the ALT and FN keys. The following window should display in Windows Explorer after you click “OK” or press the Enter key: Once you click “OK” or press the Enter key, the following window should appear: Scroll down until you find Skype, then right-click it and select Delete from the pop-up menu.

  1. Alternatively, if you wish to store your history, enter the folder and look for the file containing your Skype username.
  2. The final step is to remove any unnecessary entries from your registry.
  3. Enter the command “regedit” into the text box.
  4. Skype should be entered.

Right-click each one and select “Delete” from the drop-down menu. NOTE: When making changes to your register, you should proceed with extreme caution as major problems might emerge. It is usually a good idea to create a backup of the registry before making any changes to the registry in Windows 10.

Method 4: Use a Third-party Uninstaller

If you’ve tried all other alternatives and Skype is still refusing to remove, you may want to consider using a third-party uninstaller to complete the task. I’ll provide you with two excellent alternatives. While they are not free, they do provide free trials that should be sufficient to remove the majority of products, including Skype. IObit Uninstaller— After you have downloaded and installed the application, you will need to uninstall it. Upon launch, it should provide a list of all the apps that are currently running.

To remove Skype, click on the recycle bin icon on the right side of the screen once you’ve completed the previous steps.

The list of all the apps you’ve installed on your computer should appear on your screen shortly after that.

When the “Uninstall” window appears, click on the green “Uninstall” button.

Some Extra Thoughts

Skype isn’t utilized nearly as much as it formerly was. Even while many corporate clients like GE and Accenture continue to use Skype for Business and stand by the new software, regular users have sought alternatives to the popular communication tool. Consider the following examples: Apple enthusiasts utilize FaceTime, gamers use Discord or Twitch, and more than 1.5 billion individuals globally (including me) use WhatsApp. Other services, like as WeChat and Telegram, are “stealing” customers away from Skype, which was once the industry standard.

  • Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger are two programs that, for the most part, work really effectively for the average user in this context.
  • It has been expanded to incorporate video calling, and it continues to be offered at no cost to consumers.
  • Group conversations are smooth, and they may accommodate a maximum of 256 participants.
  • In places like as Singapore, some data plans provide unlimited WhatsApp usage as part of the package.
  • However, Messenger by Facebook, which is connected with Facebook and more focused on the messaging experience, while it also include audio and video calling functions, provides services that are comparable to WhatsApp.

We have the ability to communicate with our Facebook pals directly. The most serious issues with Messenger are its excessive data use and battery loss. Facebook, on the other hand, has created a Lite version of Messenger in order to address these issues.

Final Words

I have pleasant memories of phoning pals or speaking with fellow MMORPG players through Skype when I was a youngster, but these days, I find messaging apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to be much more handy for calling friends. The Microsoft environment provides Skype with a competitive advantage over the competition. It is frequently found pre-installed on Windows PCs, even if it is not immediately accessible or highly recommended. The point is that while most of us still have Skype installed on our computers, usage and engagement are unlikely to be as great as they once were.

Disable Skype in Windows 10

Because Skype comes pre-installed on the majority of Windows 10 computers, it may appear to be a difficult task to totally uninstall the application. The five techniques listed below will help you completely remove Skype, as well as any remaining files it may have left behind after you uninstalled it. Let’s get this party started.

Method 1. Disable Skype from opening on startup

When your computer starts up, a number of apps are launched at the same time. There are several applications, such as antivirus software, that utilize this capability, and you may wish to have them available from the time you acquire access to your computer. However, by default, your device will always launch Skype when it is first powered up as well. If you still use Skype on a regular basis or have a valid reason for not completely removing it, you may just disable it in your computer’s settings.

  1. Open the Task Manager by selecting one of the options from the drop-down menu:
  • Right-click on any empty spot in your taskbar to bring up the context menu. A context menu will be displayed as a result of this action. Here, select Task Manager from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, hold down theCtrl,Alt, and Esc buttons on your keyboard at the same time
  • And
  1. If your Task Manager has been started in the compact view, use theMore detailsoption located in the bottom left of the window to see more information. This will enlarge the window and provide you the necessary touches to access the startup programs that you have selected. Using the drop-down menu at the top of the Task Manager window, navigate to the Startup tab. You can view all of the apps that start up with your computer when it first boots up in this section. Once you’ve selected Skype, click on theDisablebutton in the bottom right corner of the window to turn it off. Its status should be changed to “Disabled,” as suggested. Restart your computer to get things going again.

As a result, your computer should now start up without any Skype software automatically launching alongside it. This allows you to continue to use Skype whenever you need to, but it will not interfere with your normal activities.

Method 2. Uninstall Skype via the Control Panel

The Control Panel is the default method for deleting apps from your Windows 10 computer. This is the recommended method. This action center used to be the primary method of navigating your smartphone and changing settings; however, with recent versions, it has been supplanted by Settings as the primary method. This does not necessarily imply that the Control Panel is no longer accessible.

The Skype program may be rapidly uninstalled if you have access to it and follow the steps in the guide. Keep in mind that this may result in the creation of certain trash files; thus, after finishing the uninstallation procedure, follow up with Method 5 to eliminate these files.

  1. Control may be found by typing “control” into the Windows 10 Search box in your taskbar. When the results have been loaded, go to the Control Panel and click on the Start button. Instead of opening the new Settings app, the conventional Control Panel will be displayed instead. To change the Viewmode icons from Small to Large, use the dropdown menu in the top-right corner of the screen. Select the Programs and Featuresbutton from the drop-down menu. Locate Skype in the list of applications. The list may be sorted alphabetically by clicking on the name of the program, or you can search for the application using the built-in search function. Click on theUninstallbutton, or right-click on Skype and select theUninstalloption from the context menu. Depending on your configuration, this may run Skype’s built-in uninstaller, which displays instructions on the screen. Follow the uninstaller’s instructions to completely remove Skype from your computer or mobile device. It may be essential to restart the computer in order to complete the operation.

Method 3. Directly remove Skype

If you downloaded Skype through the Microsoft Store or straight from the Skype.com installer, you’ll have the option to uninstall it without having to restart your computer. The following actions will be necessary in order to do this.

  1. In your taskbar, locate the “Skype” search bar and type in the word “Skype.” As soon as the results are shown, right-click on the Skypeapplication
  2. And Optionally, pick theUninstall option from the context menu if it is present. Depending on your configuration, this may run Skype’s built-in uninstaller, which displays instructions on the screen. Method 4. Uninstall Skype through the Settings app

  1. Open the Settingsapplication by using the Windows+Ikeyboard shortcut or by selecting the gear symbol from your Startmenu. Select Skype from the programs list by selecting it from the Appstab. 1. On your keyboard, press the Windows + R keys together. This will bring up the Run utility, which will be useful. Enter ” percent appdata percent ” in the text box and press the OK button. For those who wish to store their history, just open the Skype directory and navigate to the folder containing your Skype username. That file should be copied and pasted onto your desktop. For future reference, you can simply copy and paste the file back into its original place
  2. The next step is to utilize the Registry Editor to clean out any remaining files that may have accumulated. Press the Windows+R keys on your keyboard once more, and then type “regedit” without the quotation marks into the search box. To begin, press the OK button. After selectingFind from the Editmenu in the header, you may continue. Type inSkypeand press the Find button. You should be able to see a number of entries in the search results
