Disabling touchpad when mouse is connected on Windows 10

Touchpads in Windows 10 not only provide a method for navigating the user interface, but they have also evolved over time, and you can now utilize gestures to complete navigation tasks even more quickly than you could previously. Despite all of the improvements, many people still prefer the classic mouse, despite the advances in technology. However, if you want to use a mouse instead of the touchpad, it is easy to arrange Windows 10 to disable the touchpad automatically only when a USB or Bluetooth mouse is attached to the computer.

The instructions in this Windows 10 article will lead you through the simple process of disabling your laptop’s touchpad when you connect a mouse, which can be done using the Settings app and Control Panel.

  • How to deactivate the touchpad when a mouse is attached by utilizing the Settings menu item
  • How to use the Control Panel to deactivate the touchpad when a mouse is attached

How to disable touchpad when mouse is connected using Settings

  1. OpenSettings
  2. Select Devices
  3. Select Touchpad
  4. Then close Settings. Remove the check mark from the option “Leave touchpad active when a mouse is attached” under “Touchpad.”

Once you have completed the procedures, the touchpad will stay disabled until you remove your mouse from the computer.

How to disable touchpad when mouse is connected using Control Panel

However, it should be noted that this feature is only available on smartphones with a precision touchpad, as indicated in the Settings app. Even if you have a different sort of touchpad, it is possible to customize your mouse settings using Control Panel or a third-party program – which is often given by your device’s manufacturer. For example, if you’re using a Synaptics touchpad, you may adjust the mouse settings in Control Panel by following the procedures outlined below:

  1. Control Panel should be opened. Select Hardware and Sound from the drop-down menu. Click on the mouse icon under “Devices and Printers.” Remove the check mark from the Disable internal pointing device when an external USB pointing device is attached option on the “Device Settings” tab.

In addition, keep in mind that, depending on the manufacturer, the option to turn off the touchpad while a mouse is connected may be tucked away in the support documentation. The ability to deactivate the touchpad, for example, may be found in Dell’s support software on some of the company’s notebook computers.

  1. Open the touchpad application on your computer. Choose the mouse that you’re currently using
  2. Check theDisable Touchpad when USB Mouse is present option
  3. If it is there, disable the touchpad.

6 Ways to Disable the Touchpad in Windows 10

When purchasing a new laptop, we place a great importance on a touchpad that is both elegant and smooth. However, there may be situations when you want to completely get rid of the item in question. It is possible that the touchpad is detecting inadvertent clicks while you type on the keyboard, that you want to utilize an external device, or that there is another cause. It is not physically feasible to separate it from the laptop, however it may be turned off via the laptop’s settings. Let’s take a look at six alternative methods for turning off the touchpad on your laptop.

1. Disabling the Touchpad in Windows Settings

If you want to make any changes to your Windows settings, the first place you should go is in the Settings app. So let’s have a look at how to deactivate the touchpad in Windows settings first, before moving on to more advanced techniques of removing the touchpad in the future. Right-click on the WindowsStartbutton and selectSettings from the context menu. Go to Devices and then to Touchpad from the left-sidebar menu to complete the process.

To turn off the touchpad, toggle theTouchpadtoggle to the off position. The touchpad’s sensitivity settings are the only ones that can be accessed through the Settings app, which implies that it cannot be disabled.

2. Disabling the Touchpad in the Control Panel

Instead, you may deactivate the touchpad in the Windows Control Panel, which is an option. If you decide to go down this road, you have three alternatives to consider:

1. Disabling Touchpad Completely

In the Windows Control Panel, go to theMousecategory and disable the mouse. Select the touchpad tab under Mouse Properties, which in this example is ELAN, and then click the OK button. To turn off the ELAN Touchpad, press the Stop Device button. The touchpad will be disabled if you select Yes in the Disable Device warning popup window. To avoid getting stuck after deactivating your touchpad, keep an external mouse close by. It is the only method to get your touchpad back to operate once it has been disabled.

2. Disabling Touchpad When You Connect an External Device

Alternatively, you may tick the box labeled “Disable when external USB pointing device is plugged in,” which will disable the touchpad pad as soon as an external pointing device is connected to the computer. Following the removal of the external device, the touchpad will begin to function normally.

3. Disabling Touchpad Clicks While Keeping Its Scroll Functionality

Finally, but certainly not least, if you want to deactivate clicks on the touchpad while keeping the scrolling on the touchpad and the button on the touchpad operational, there is another solution. Again, go to Control Panel and choose theTouchpadcategory from the drop-down menu. Navigate to theTappingconfiguration section of the One-fingersettings. When the Enable checkbox is unchecked, the touchpad will no longer respond to clicks, but the rest of its functionality will continue to operate.

If none of these techniques work for you, you may try one of the various methods of deactivating the touchpad in Windows that are available.

3. Disabling the Touchpad in Device Manager

If none of the above mentioned ways work for you, the Device Manager should be your next port of call for disabling the touchpad. The way it works is as follows:

  1. The Device Manager should be your next port of call if none of the previously mentioned approaches are successful. The procedure is as follows:

You may have to disable each driver one at a time if you discover that both your external pointing device and touchpad have the same driver name. This will allow you to determine which driver represents your touchpad. However, this solution may be inapplicable in other cases, such as when Windows does not enable deactivating the primary touchpad device through the driver’s interface.

4. Disabling the Touchpad via ETD Control Centre

It is also known as Elan Trackpad Device Control Centre, and it is an application that runs in the background of your device and controls the activity of your trackpad. When you exit this software, your trackpad will be disabled. If you have this software installed on your device, the instructions below will guide you through the process of uninstalling it:

  1. Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager from the drop-down menu. The ETD Control Centre should be found in the list of programs. By left-clicking on the task, you may end it or disable it.

ChooseTask Manager from the context menu by right-clicking the taskbar. The ETD Control Centre may be found in the list of programs. By left-clicking on the task, you may end it (or disable it).

  1. To launch the Run command box, press the Windows key + R together
  2. Type “Regedit” and hit the Enter key
  3. Allow access to the user control panel by selecting Yes. Using the following route, navigate to thePrecisionTouchPadstatus folder on your computer. (Alternatively, you may copy and paste it into the Registry.) ComputerHKEY CURRENT USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPrecisionTouchPadStatus
  4. To make changes to the Value data, double-tap onEnabledentry. Set the value of data to 0 instead of 1.

ComputerHKEY CURRENT USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPrecisionTouchPadStatus; To modify the Value data, double-tap onEnabledentry. Instead of 1, setValue data to 0.

6. Use Third-Party Software

If everything else fails, you may turn to third-party applications for assistance. Touchpad Blocker is a fantastic free program that allows you to enable or disable the touchpad by pressing a series of keys. By default, they are configured to the keyboard shortcuts CTRL + ALT + F9. By hitting CTRL + F9 on your keyboard, you may toggle the blocker on and off (no ALT). To learn more about how to use this program, go to the Touchpad Blocker official page. 5 Ways to Turn Off Touchpad on Windows 10

In laptops, the touchpad serves as a pointing device, and it takes the place of the external mouse that was formerly utilized in larger computers. However, even though the touchpad, also known as the trackpad, has been available for more than two decades, it has yet to completely replace the functionality and simplicity of use that comes with utilizing an external mouse. Some Windows laptops are provided with an amazing touchpad, but others are supplied with an ordinary or below-par touchpad, which is not uncommon.

  1. Having two separate pointing devices available at the same time, on the other hand, might be counter-productive.
  2. The frequency and likelihood of unintentional touches rise as the distance between the keyboard and the touchpad increases.
  3. Fortunately, removing the touchpad on a Windows 10 laptop is a simple process that takes just a few minutes.
  4. Because of the lack of an external mouse and a disabled touchpad, your laptop will be almost worthless unless you are familiar with keyboard shortcuts.

Additionally, to turn the touchpad back on, you will need to use an external mouse. Alternatively, you may choose to have the touchpad turned off automatically when the mouse is attached.

How to disable touchpad on Windows 10?

There are a plethora of options available for disabling the touchpad on your Windows 10 laptop. There are two options for disabling the touchpad: either search around in Windows Settings or the Device Manager, or use an external third-party tool to do so automatically. However, the quickest and most convenient option is to use the keyboard shortcut/hotkey that most laptop keyboard manufacturers have included. A key that allows you to activate or disable the touchpad will normally be placed in the top row of your keyboard and will be one of the f-numbered keys (for example, fn key + f9).

A physical switch/button in the top right corner of the touchpad, found on some laptops, such as those manufactured by HP, may be used to deactivate or enable the touchpad when double-clicked.

5 Ways to Turn Off Touchpad on Windows 10 laptops

It is possible to disable a precision touchpad on your laptop by modifying the touchpad settings in the Windows Settings. However, on laptops with a non-precision type touchpad, the option to deactivate the touchpad is not immediately accessible through the settings menu. Using the Advanced touchpad settings, they may still deactivate the touchpad if necessary. 1.Open Windows Settings by selecting one of the options listed belowa. Click on the start/windows button, type “settings” into the search box, and click Enter.

  • Select Settings from the power user menu by pressing the Windows key + X (or by right-clicking on the start button) on your keyboard.

  • When you do this, a Mouse Properties window will appear, which contains a higher amount of adjustable options for the trackpad.
  • Highlight/select your touchpad by clicking on it, and then click on thePropertiesbutton that appears at the bottom of the window to access its settings.

Finally, navigate to the Drivertab and click on Disable Device to turn off the touchpad on your laptop computer. Alternatively, you can opt to Uninstall Device, however Windows will prompt you to re-download the touchpad drivers every time your system wakes up, so be prepared.

  5. This solution will not work for all laptop users since the option to deactivate or enable the touchpad through the BIOSmenu is only available on select laptop models manufactured by specified manufacturers and OEMs.
  6. Check the BIOS menu to see if the option to deactivate the trackpad is available or not after booting into it.

Method 4: Disable ETD Control Center

Your laptop’s ETD application begins running automatically when it is turned on; the touchpad is only functional when ETD is operating in the background. The touchpad will be disabled as a result of preventing the ETD control center from starting during the boot up process. Touchpad Blocker is one of the more popular programs for disabling the touchpad on laptop computers. A free and lightweight program that allows you to configure shortcut keys to enable and disable the application. Users who have a synaptic touchpad may additionally assign a shortcut key to turn on or off the touchpad itself when necessary.

  • When the touchpad blocker is active, it may be accessible from the taskbar.
  • Touchpad Blocker may be used to deactivate the touchpad in the following ways: 1.
  • Installing Touchpad Blocker on your machine is as simple as double-clicking on the downloaded file and following the on-screen instructions.
