How to access BIOS or UEFI on Windows 10 PCs
The BIOS is the section of your computer’s operating system that controls the settings for its CPU, RAM, storage, and ports. In years past, you’d be requested to use the F1 key to enter setup during the PC boot-up phase, or anything along those lines. Not anymore. Now that UEFI has mostly supplanted the BIOS on many modern devices, getting to these settings can be a bit more difficult. We demonstrate how to access the BIOS or UEFI, regardless of whether you are using a new Windows 10 PC or an older one.
What’s the difference between BIOS and UEFI?
The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is the system firmware that resides on a chip in your computer and controls several functions. Accessing the BIOS on newer machines

Finally, choose UEFI Firmware Settings from the drop-down menu. You will now have access to the UEFI, which will allow you to make changes to the settings. Of course, make certain that you understand what you’re doing, since doing it incorrectly might result in complications.
Accessing the BIOS in older PCs
Despite the fact that Windows 10 is a totally contemporary operating system, older devices may still be running BIOS, which is firmware that cannot be changed to the newer UEFI. When booting into Windows PE (WinPE) or Windows Setup, you can choose between UEFI and older BIOS modes. Following the installation of Windows, you may be able to swap between firmware modes by using theMBR2GPTtool. In general, install Windows using the more recent UEFI mode, rather than the older BIOS version, because it offers additional security features than the older BIOS mode. Alternatively, if you are booting from a network that only supports BIOS, you will have to boot into legacy BIOS mode.
To boot to UEFI or BIOS:
- Navigate to the firmware menus. You can employ any of the following methods:

Make sure you boot into the right mode every time
The following are a handful of methods for ensuring that your computer boots into the correct firmware mode every time it is powered on.
Use preformatted hard drives, and use a method that doesn’t automatically format the drive.
In order to ensure that your drive boots into a certain mode, utilize drives that have been preformatted using the GPT file format for UEFI mode or the MBR file format for BIOS mode, as appropriate. When the installation begins, if the computer is booted into the incorrect mode, the Windows installation will be unsuccessful. This can be resolved by restarting the computer in the proper firmware mode.
Remove the UEFI or BIOS boot files
Delete the files that Windows PE or Windows Setup need to boot the computer into UEFI or BIOS mode if you only want it to boot into a certain mode. Remove the following files from your computer, depending on the boot mode you wish to use.
Boot only when in UEFI mode
Windows PE or Windows Setup media should have a bootmgrfile removed from the root of the media. In this case, the device will not be able to boot into BIOS mode.
Boot only when in BIOS mode
Windows PE or Windows Setup media should be removed from their respective root directories.
This stops the device from booting into the UEFI configuration. Create a bootable USB device using Windows PE.
