DISM is an acronym that stands for Deployment Image Servicing and Management. It’s a type of Swiss Army knife for dealing with Windows operating system images, both offline and online, and it’s available for both Windows and Linux.

DISM has a plethora of capabilities, each with its own set of options and settings, but the syntax for basic system file repair is rather simple (though it often requires multiple passes before it can set things straight).

Consider this example syntax (for further information, see to theTechNet DISM Technical Reference): /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth /dism /online The majority of the time, when you run this command, the result will reveal that there is nothing wrong, as seen in Figure 1: Figure 1 of the IDG: DISM is capable of examining the health of any Windows image.

  • The/checkhealth When the command is performed, it simply examines the currently running image (which is what the /online command instructs it to do) to see if it can identify any damage or corruption.
  • The benefit of using/checkhealth is that it not only informs you whether or not damage has been discovered, but also whether or not that damage is repairable.
  • The repair of component store corruption should be attempted if DISM states that it has been discovered and can be repaired.
  • It reads from a local copy of your Windows image files and replaces corrupt or problematic items in the Windows Side-by-Side (WinSxS) store, which is corrupt or questionable.
  • Because it is capable of genuinely repairing a Windows image, it requires a source from which to do such fixes in order to function.
  • Depending on the firewall settings on your network, this may or may not be successful.
  • Windows image (.wim) files or a compressed Windows image (.zip) files are both acceptable formats (.esd, which is used for electronic software downloads of Windows installations, as the file extension is meant to communicate).

Use of, UUP Dump, or Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool to obtain the correct Windows 10 or 11 version/build (see my article ” The best places to find Windows 10 ISOs ” for more information on how to use these sources) and then creating media or mounting the ISO file to provide DISM with the appropriate rights and source from which to work is recommended.

A typical DISM output using/restorehealth is seen in Figure 2: Figure 2 (IDG): In the majority of cases, even when DISM/checkhealth discovers faults, the /restorehealthoption is effective.

TechNet describes the system file checker as “a tool that checks all protected system files for changes and validates that they are still in good working order.” If you run the command SFC/scannowfrom the command line, it will inform you if anything is incorrect.

A restore point is a snapshot of the operating system state of a Windows PC taken at a specified moment in time. If you enable the Windows System Restore feature, the operating system will generate and manage restore points on your computer’s behalf. You may check to see if this is an option on your target system by typingrestore pointinto the search box in Windows 10. It is recommended that the System Properties window opens to the System Protection tab, as illustrated in Figure 5.
